Tap Add trip. Enter where you went from and to and the reason, then enter the odometer reading at the start and the end and the app works out the distance. Save, and it joins the list with its cost at your rate. There is a button to log the return leg in one tap.

Most apps like this ask you for a distance, so entering two odometer readings can be a surprise. It is deliberate: the readings are the record you would want if a claim were ever checked, and the distance falls out of the difference between them.

Yes. Leave the end reading empty and save. The trip sits in the list as in progress, with no distance or cost yet. When you get back, open it, add the end reading, and the distance and the claim fill in.

Each vehicle has a rate per mile, or per kilometre, that you set. Every business trip is its distance times that rate, and the total across the top of the list is the sum for the tax year. Trips marked personal or commuting are left out of it.

Open Settings. The distance unit and the currency are there, and the rate is set on each vehicle. Change a vehicle’s rate and it applies to trips from then on. A trip keeps the rate it was recorded with, which is why the report can show different rates down the same column.

Settings lets you set the day the reporting year begins, so the totals match your tax year rather than the calendar. In the United Kingdom that is 6 April by default.

Open the year’s summary and choose to export. Claim report (PDF) lays out every journey by month, totalled by vehicle, ready to send to an accountant or an employer. Spreadsheet (CSV) is the raw trips, to open on a computer. The Claim report is part of Premium; the Spreadsheet is free.

With Premium, turn on iCloud sync in Settings. Sign both devices in to the same Apple Account and a trip logged on one appears on the other. If they drift apart, check both are on the same account and have a connection. Sync is Apple’s service, so it can take a moment to catch up.

The first time the new app opens on the same device it reads the log the old Business Trip Tracker left behind and brings your trips across. If they are not there, do not delete the old app yet: email us and we will help you get them over.

Open the Premium screen and tap Restore. That re-checks your App Store purchases and brings Premium back without charging you again. It also carries a purchase to a new device signed in to the same Apple Account. If it still does not show, check you are signed in to the account you bought it with.

Press and hold the Home Screen, tap the button at the top left, and search for Mileage. The widget shows the running total for the year, in your theme, without opening the app.
