On the Family screen, pick the child, then add a test. Give it the date of the school test and type the words in. You can add up to fifty words, each up to fourteen letters. The Family screen sits behind the parent gate, so a child cannot change their own list.

Tap Forgotten the PIN? on the gate. Answer two sums in a row and the PIN is cleared, and you can set a new one in Settings. The PIN is held only on the device it was set on, so setting one on the phone does not put one on the iPad.

Words are read by the voices installed on your device, and some voices get some words wrong. Open Settings and try the voice picker: it lists every voice installed for your curriculum’s accent, best first. Downloading a higher quality voice under iOS Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content → Voices usually helps most.

Homographs such as read, wind and live are a known limit. The app has one recording of the spelling, not the meaning, so it cannot always pick the right sound. Tap the sentence button to hear the word in context.

The accent follows the curriculum, not the device. Change the curriculum in Settings and the voice changes with it. An American curriculum reads the letter z as “zee”; the others say “zed”.

Check the side switch or Control Centre for silent mode, then the volume while a word is playing, since that sets the app’s own level rather than the ringer. Sounds and haptics each have a switch in Settings. If the device is connected to something over Bluetooth, the sound may be going there.

All three reminders start switched off, so turn on the ones you want in Settings: a nudge on days without practice, one the evening before a test, and a Sunday summary. Then check iOS Settings → Notifications → Spellings and make sure notifications are allowed. A Focus mode can also silence them.

They are scheduled a week ahead on the device itself, and laid down again whenever the app is opened. An app left unopened for more than a week goes quiet rather than carrying on nagging.

Both devices need to be signed in to the same Apple Account, with iCloud Drive on and Spellings switched on under iCloud in iOS Settings. Sync runs in the background and needs a connection, so open the app on both devices and give it a minute.

If one device has been offline for a while, the most recent change to a given detail wins. That is worth knowing if two people edit the same child at once.

From the Family screen, share the family and send the invitation. They get every child, the Family dashboard and Settings, and your Premium while you have it. They need their own Apple Account; they do not need to pay.

Your parent PIN is not shared. Each device has its own, so they set theirs on their own device.

Open the Premium screen and tap Restore. The device must be signed in to the Apple Account that bought it. If it was bought by someone else in your family, check Family Sharing is on for them, and that purchase sharing is enabled.

To cancel a subscription, go to your Apple Account settings on the device. It cannot be cancelled from inside the app, and deleting the app does not cancel it.

On the free plan one child can be used at a time. You can change which child once; after that it stays put until you subscribe or buy Lifetime Premium. Nothing is deleted while Premium is off. The other children are locked, and come straight back.

The word entry screen blocks a short list of offensive words, and it is a blunt filter, so it can occasionally catch an ordinary word. Email us with the word and we will take it off the list.

Open a child’s progress and export the report. It comes out as a PDF through the normal share sheet, so you can mail it, message it or save it to Files.

Delete a single child from the Family screen and their tests, scores and progress go with them. Delete all family data, at the bottom of Settings, asks twice and then removes everything from this device, from iCloud, and from the devices of anyone you shared with. It cannot be undone.

Primary school, roughly ages four to eleven. Each curriculum covers seven year groups, from the first year of school to the last year of primary. Older children can still use it with a list you type in.
