Terms

The app is set up by a parent or guardian aged 18 or over, and used by the children in their household. If you set it up, you are agreeing to these terms and you are responsible for how the app is used on your devices, including anything bought in it.

It is for family use, not for running a classroom or a tutoring business. If you teach and want to use it with pupils, get in touch first.

You get a personal, non-exclusive licence to use the app on devices you own or control, for as long as these terms are kept to. The app itself, its design, its artwork and its code stay ours. You may not copy it, sell it, rent it, take it apart to work out how it is built, or try to get around the parent gate or the Premium checks, except so far as the law says you may do so regardless of what a contract states.

The app is free to download. On the free plan one child can be used at a time, with their own spelling lists, practice, tests and progress. Premium adds up to eight children, practice beyond the week’s list, and words from earlier school years.

Premium comes as a monthly subscription, a yearly subscription, or Lifetime Premium, which is a single payment with nothing to renew. All three are shown in the app with the price in your own currency before you buy anything.

If Premium lapses, nothing you have made is deleted. Additional children are locked rather than removed, and come back if you subscribe again or buy Lifetime Premium.

Everything you pay for is sold by Apple through the App Store. You pay Apple, not us.

• A subscription renews automatically at the end of each period unless you turn renewal off at least 24 hours before it ends.
• Apple charges your account for the renewal within the 24 hours before the period ends.
• Manage or cancel a subscription in your Apple Account settings, not in this app. Deleting the app does not cancel it.
• Premium is shareable through Apple’s Family Sharing, if you have it turned on.

Prices can change. Apple will tell you before a subscription renews at a new price, and you can cancel instead.

Apple handles all billing and all refunds. We cannot issue one, because the money never comes to us in the first place. Ask Apple through reportaproblem.apple.com. Your statutory rights as a consumer are not affected by anything on this page.

The children you add, the spelling lists you type and everything your family earns in the app are yours. They stay on your devices and in your own iCloud account. We have no copy and no way to read them, which is set out in full in the privacy policy.

Because we hold nothing, keeping it safe is down to your device backups and your iCloud account. Deleting the family data in Settings removes it everywhere and cannot be undone.

The word entry screen rejects a short list of offensive words. It is a blunt filter and it can be wrong in both directions, so what reaches a child is ultimately the parent’s call.

The app includes word lists for six curricula, compiled by us from published curriculum documents and the common word lists that schools use alongside them:

• United Kingdom: the National Curriculum in England, English Appendix 1. Crown copyright, used under the Open Government Licence v3.0. Reception words follow EYFS phonics phases 2 and 3.
• Ireland: the Primary Language Curriculum (NCCA, 2019), with Dolch high-frequency words.
• United States: the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts, with Dolch and Fry sight words.
• Canada: the Ontario Language curriculum (2023), checked against the British Columbia and Alberta progressions.
• Australia: the Australian Curriculum: English v9.0, with the NSW and Victorian phonics sequences.
• New Zealand: the New Zealand Curriculum, English (2025).

Only England has a statutory word list. Everywhere else the curriculum sets out the spelling rules a year should cover, and the words are our reading of that. Treat all of it as practice material, not as an official or complete list, and not as an endorsement by any government, department or examining body. Your school’s own list is the one that counts, which is why you can type it in.

Spellings is practice, not teaching. We cannot promise a particular result in a spelling test, in a national assessment or at school generally.

Words are read aloud by the voices installed on your device, and some voices mispronounce some words. Where a word has two pronunciations, such as read or wind, the app cannot always tell which one is meant. A different voice can be chosen in Settings.

Syncing between devices depends on iCloud, which is Apple’s service and not ours. If it is slow, off or unavailable, the app keeps working on the device in front of you and catches up later.

We may change the app, add things or take things away, and we may stop publishing it. If we ever stop, the version on your device keeps working for as long as iOS supports it, and you will still be able to get your data out as a PDF.

The app is provided as it is. Nothing here limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot be limited by law, and nothing here affects your statutory rights as a consumer.

Beyond that, we are not liable for losses we could not reasonably have expected when you started using the app, and where we are liable, our total liability is limited to what you have paid us for the app in the twelve months before the problem arose. On the free plan that is nothing, which is worth knowing before you rely on the app for something important. Keep your own note of anything you cannot afford to lose.

You can stop at any time by deleting the app, and cancel a subscription in your Apple Account settings. We can end your licence if these terms are broken, for example by trying to get around the Premium checks. Deleting the app does not delete data already in your iCloud account, so use Delete all family data in Settings first if you want it gone.

If these terms change, the date at the top changes with them, and anything material is noted in the app’s release notes. If you carry on using the app after a change, that is your acceptance of it. If you would rather not accept it, stop using the app and cancel any subscription.

These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and disputes go to the courts of England and Wales. If you live elsewhere in the United Kingdom, or in another country, you keep the protection of the mandatory consumer law where you live and can bring a claim there.
